There’s few more ubiquitous totems of youth than a backpack. Functional, spacious, cost effective, but very difficult to style (especially if you have a baby face like me). Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t think backpacks are evil or should be avoided. There are tons of really cool backpacks out there, and even more cool ways to style them. I see it all the time, especially among the hiking/outdoor community. HOWEVER, if you’re rocking up to your business casual 9-5 in the same Herschel you’ve had since freshman year, it might be time for a refresh.
The goal of this list is to provide you folks with plenty of different options for a daily-driver bag that’ll suit your needs, weekday or not. And don’t stop at the specific model I’ve included, dig deeper! Almost every brand on this list offers a wide range of bags ranging from backpacks, to clutches, to shoulder bags and more. Use this as a jumping off point for finding yourself a bag that’ll serve you for the next decade and more. There’s a wide range of price-points and materials here, hopefully enough to cover everyone. If you’re hunting for a deal, be sure to look up these brands on 2nd hand marketplaces and fire off a couple lowballs.
Canvas/Nylon Bags
Aside from a few of the cleaner, more simple designs, these are bags I’d recommend for those who work in a more casual workspace. Whether you freelance, travel a lot, work in a creative field, these bags should fit pretty seamlessly into your lifestyle.
William Ellery Beachcomber Bag
Industrial grade vinyl coated mesh, nylon webbing, and solid brass hardware. This is a bag out of my personal arsenal, and it gets a ton of use.
Porter Yoshida Helmet Bag
One of the most popular bags from Japanese maker Porter Yoshida, these look so sick once they’re broken in.
Porter Yoshida Crag Tote
A slightly more quirked up Porter bag, personally one of my favourites.
Parrott Canvas Garden Tote
Suuuuuuper robust, well priced made in USA canvas totes. And they do monogramming too.
