There are few more transformative interior design elements than lighting. I could probably insert some quote by Ray Eames or Le Corbusier but I really can’t be bothered because I’d rather just talk about how I use it. Dark corners really bug me and since my current place doesn’t get very much light, my very simple approach has been to add lights wherever there is darkness. Stick to some 2700k bulbs and the result is a cozy but well-lit atmosphere after the sun goes down. If you want to get more involved, start considering where you want your light to go from its origin point, and this is where things can get more complicated. Personally, I like lamps that diffuse light evenly in all dimensions (like a paper lamp), but for a beside, I might prefer a directional shade that’s better for reading. Whatever your preference may be, there’s a ton of really great options in the list below, so please peruse at your leisure.
Generally, this list is more focused on boutique and/or independent makers (with a few exceptions) that have a focus on lighting. Yes, you can find lamps from Ikea, Structube, Article, CB2, West Elm and all that, but those are easy to come by (and get enough attention already), so I figured it best to highlight some smaller craftspeople.
Wooj
Price Range: $79.00 - $450.00
Based out of NYC, Wooj has made a name for themselves with well-priced, well designed lamps made out of 3D printed corn filament. Their wave lamp (pictured above) is what they’re best known for, with frequent collaborations with independent creatives that can get pretty wild.
Stamátios
Price Range: $95.00 - $4,000.00
Stamátios is best known for their Parállilo collection of lamps which are entirely hand-made in Montreal, available in maple, cherry, walnut, and aluminum. Personally, I love the soft diffusion that radiates throughout the entire form.
Camila Gaza Manly
Price Range: ~$200.00
Another Montreal based craftsperson, Camila Gaza Manly focuses on intricate, playful paper light sculptures, often incorporating colour, pattern, and oragami-esque folding techniques.
Huey Lightshop
Price Range: $214.00 - $1,124.00
Handmade in the Blue Mountains of Ontario, Huey makes some of the prettiest traditional lighting solutions I’ve seen, and at a pretty reasonable price-point.
Asano
Price Range: $140.00 - $155.00
A great source for simple, well-priced Japanese paper lamps. For the past 90 years these have been handmade in the Gifu prefecture from Washi paper, with the lamps themselves designed by the renowned Shigeru Uchida.
James Cherry
Price Range: ask him
Bouncing between NYC and LA, James Cherry is a favourite recent discovery of mine which I’ll credit to the Instagram explore page. His eclectic-organic style is super funky and reminds me of alien fungus in a way (I promise that’s meant as a compliment).
