Vintage Furniture Directory
An extensive list of 60+ vintage furniture dealers in North America.
As I hope you are all aware, I am a huge proponent of purchasing second hand. Whether it be clothing, watches, or home furnishings, I firmly believe that the most interesting stylings are assembled from items which have already lived a life. And if you’ve taken a look at furniture prices these days, there’s a handsome financial incentive to shop 2nd hand as well. While a mid-market sofa runs well into the four figure range, the vintage market can afford you well-kept designer furniture for the same ticket, or a some more modest (but equally stylish) labels for a fraction of the price. This theme spreads across the entire furniture market. With home fixtures being increasingly expensive to produce, you’re best off hitting FB Marketplace, Kijiji, and Craigslist to bring your space together.
All of my best and most cherished items of furniture have been purchased 2nd hand, and a big part of that curation process has been keeping an eye on the right dealers. Now, the best deals will always come from individuals on marketplace platforms because they’re (usually) not trying to make a profit or run a business, BUT, that doesn’t mean you can’t still find great deals from a reputable 2nd hand furniture dealer. Often these folks will restore/reupholster furniture, give it a full cleaning, and sometimes offer delivery and shipping, much like your local furniture store. The mark-up can be worth it, and is usually a better deal than anything you’d get new regardless. Finally, when it comes to selling the furniture that you bought, the amount of money you’re able to recuperate is going to be much closer to your purchase price than anything you’d get from places like Ikea or Structube.
Now that I’ve laid out my case for why you should shop second hand furniture, let me tell you a bit more about this list. Given that I’m as obsessive as I am picky, I’ve spent the past three years passively building a list of all the furniture dealers in the two most populated provinces in Canada, Quebec and Ontario. These have been my focus because I live in Montreal and furniture shopping is relatively geo-centric given how cumbersome most of the items I’m interested in are. Currently the list stands at 27 Quebec dealers and 26 Ontario dealers, with an additional 12 dealers from other areas that I felt were worth highlighting. Apologies in advance to everyone who’s outside of this geographic area I’m focusing on, but thems the breaks. If you live in the East Coast of the US, I recommend you still read through as it’s not too arduous to make the trip for a piece of furniture that may stay with you for decades!
Final piece of advice - I’ve linked the official websites of these dealers when possible, but I’d check out and follow the instagrams of dealers you like, as they often post first there. Happy hunting!
